With the aim of fostering a dynamic environment for English practice and improving students' communication skills, the English Club under the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Van Hien University, organized its regular May gathering with the theme 'Describing Things'. The program attracted eager participation from its members, creating a joyful, inventive, and highly inspiring learning space.
With the goal of helping students hone their English skills in practical situations, the gathering featured various interactive activities. These were designed to encourage learners to utilize their vocabulary, observational skills, critical thinking, and English presentation skills.
Kicking off the program, members engaged in lively warm-up games. By observing pictures and describing objects using simple English sentences, students had the opportunity to naturally review and expand their vocabulary. Creative responses, humorous guessing moments, and enthusiastic participation fostered a joyful atmosphere filled with laughter right from the very first minutes. This activity not only put members at ease but also helped boost their confidence in speaking English in front of a crowd.
Following the program was a challenge that demanded effective collaboration and teamwork. Members were divided into three groups, each receiving an image to analyze together. Each group's task was to describe what they observed in the picture, identify the ongoing issue, and propose appropriate solutions. This activity helped students develop their logical thinking, communication skills, and ability to use English during group discussions.
Notably, after just five minutes of preparation, a random member from each group was selected to present in front of the club. Despite this unexpected challenge, the students demonstrated remarkable composure, confidence, and excellent improvisational skills. Many presentations showcased creative expression, a rich vocabulary, and a strong spirit of mutual support among team members. The encouraging rounds of applause following each speech contributed to a highly positive and cohesive learning environment.
Wrapping up the gathering was a short presentation activity. In this section, members had only 15 minutes to prepare a brief English presentation. Despite the tight time limit, the groups completed the task excellently, showcasing fascinating ideas and engaging delivery styles. This activity not only helped students hone their presentation skills but also enhanced their ability to work under time pressure—an essential skill for their future studies and careers.
Through a variety of practical activities, the May gathering provided students with numerous opportunities to practice English in a friendly and open environment. This was also a wonderful chance for members to interact, learn from one another, and together foster a positive learning spirit within the student community of the Faculty of Foreign Languages.
